Sodium-22 from Supernovae: a Meteorite Connection

چکیده

There are several meteoritic noble gas components whose isotopic abundances are distinctly different from the solar abundance. One of these components, Ne-E(L), is a 22Ne-rich component carried by presolar graphite. Neon-22 is dominantly from the radiogenic decay of 22Na (T1/2 = 2.6 a), but it also contains 22Ne produced by 14N(α, γ )18F(e+ν)18O(α, γ )22Ne. The proportions of 22Ne from the two different origins vary with graphite density. Many low-density graphite grains (1.65–1.72 g cm−3) exhibit 18O and 28Si excesses, signatures of supernova origin. We revisited noble gas data on bulk (= aggregates) and single-grain analyses of presolar graphite to better understand the origin of Ne-E(L). We conclude that essentially all 22Ne in low-density graphite grains originated from 22Na produced in the O/Ne zone in supernovae. The initial presence of 22Na in these grains indicates that grains formed within a few years after the supernova explosion. The absence of implanted 22Ne can be explained if the grains and the gas in the ejecta became decoupled when they encountered the reverse shock and sputtering eroded the grains in the outer H-rich zone and in the interstellar medium.

Lut 009, an H4 (S2, W4) ordinary chondrite meteorite from Lut Desert of Iran

Lut 009 meteorite was found during a trip to Lut Desert of Iran in March,2012, at 30°20.38' N, 59°09.04' E. Chemical compositions of equilibrated olivine (Fa19.3 ± 0.5) and orthopyroxene (Fs16.7 ± 0.6) show that the meteorite sample belongs to H group of ordinary chondrites, while the texture (chondrule petrography and plagioclase size) suggests a petrologic type of 4. The Lut 009 has been very...

On the stellar sources of presolar graphite

Primitive meteorites contain graphite spherules whose anomalous isotopic compositions indicate a stellar origin. The isolation of presolar graphite grains is difficult and they have been less well studied than presolar silicon carbide grains. While previous isotopic measurements have been made on graphite from the Murchison meteorite and mostly on low-density grains, a new separation of graphit...

Presolar Graphite from the Murchison Meteorite: Imprint of Nucleosynthesis and Grain Formation

Presolar graphite is the carrier of Ne-E(L) and most 22 Ne in Ne-E(L) had long been attributed to radiogenic decay of 22 Na from novae. Of presolar graphite grains with a range of density (1.6-2.2g/cm 3 ), low-density graphite grains extracted from the Murchison meteorite are characterized by 18 O excesses and Si isotopic anomalies and are believed to have formed in supernova ejecta. From noble...

Barium and Neodymium Isotopic Anomalies in the Allende Meteorite

Isotopic anomalies have been found for Ba and Nd in two inclusions from the Allende meteorite. These inclusions are typical Ca-Al-rich objects associated with early condensates from the solar nebula but have distinctive O and Mg isotopic anomalies of the FUN type. Sample Cl shows a depletion only in Ba of 2 parts in 10 and normal Nd. Sample EK1-4-1 shows large positive excesses in the unshielde...

Presolar Graphite from the Murchison Meteorite: Noble Gases Revisited

Introduction: Ne-E(L) is one of the anomalous noble gas components that ultimately led to the discovery of presolar grains in meteorites. The component is extremely enriched in 22 Ne and this fact prompted the idea that the 22 Ne is from the decay of 22 Na [1]. The carrier of Ne-E(L) is presolar graphite [2], which has been extracted from Murchison [3] and Orgueil [4]. There are four graphite-r...
